Sausage Gravy

Type of Cuisine: American

This is a simple recipe that is so delicious. You can eat it with biscuits, chicken fried steak, or as my father did, with plain white toast. Each Christmas morning, my father would wake up before everyone else, start a pot of coffee, cook up a pound of bacon and make his sausage gravy, so when the rest of us woke up, the house smelled awesome!

Ingredients:

1 lbsage sausage
½ cupall-purpose flour
5-6 cupswhole milk
To tastesalt
To tastecracked black pepper

Instructions:

  1. In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until fully browned
  2. Add flour and stir until the flour has absorbed all the oil from the sausage
  3. Cook for another minute
  4. Turn heat to low and add 4 cups of milk – frequently stir to get all the burnt bits of goodness off the bottom of the pan
  5. As the gravy starts to thicken, season liberally with salt and pepper
  6. Continue adding milk until you get your desired consistency
  7. Simmer on low, frequently stirring for 15 minutes until you have a nice, slightly brown color
