February News: Building Communities with DHHL

Building Communities with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands

Grove Farm announced the sale of approximately 260 acres of land in Līhu‘e mauka of Isenberg Park to the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL). The location is within Kaua‘i County’s General Plan for future residential homes and is conveniently located near Wilcox Medical Center and Līhu‘e’s urban core.

DHHL has plans for 1,100 homesteads for their beneficiaries, including both a single-family and agricultural community. which will address Kauaʻi’s critical need for housing. Grove Farm’s Senior Vice President, David Hinazumi stated, “The sale is in alignment with Grove Farm’s mission to support local home ownership and is honored to have partnered with DHHL.”

Since 1864, Grove Farm’s mission is to contribute to a more sustainable Kaua‘i through responsible land stewardship, building local communities and philanthropy.

Hope For Our Future: A Grove Farm Scholar Story

Hope Newton, a 2023 Grove Farm Foundation Scholar recipient and third-year aerospace studies student at the University of Texas at Austin, continues to excel and represent Kauaʻi with pride. This summer, she will take a major step toward her career goals after completing a rigorous interview process and earning a paid internship with Boeing as a propulsion engineer in Puget Sound. Congratulations, Hope!

While studying far from home, Hope says she misses her family—and eating pasteles in Texas—but continues to make the most of the opportunities before her. Hope’s motto that best describes her outlook on life is “Do the work, and do it with heart,” reflecting the dedication behind her success.

Hope recently wrote to the Grove Farm Foundation, expressing her gratitude for the scholarship and the impact it has had on the opportunities she has received.

“I am sincerely grateful to receive the Grove Farm Scholarship for the third year as I begin my junior year at the University of Texas at Austin. Your continued support has been very important in helping me pursue my degree in aerospace engineering. Over the past three years, I have grown both academically and personally through my coursework, campus involvement, and hands-on experience… Thank you for your generosity and commitment to supporting students like me.”

Kevin Newton, Hope’s Dad, wrote to the Grove Farm Foundation to express his gratitude and shared this sentiment with us.

One thing I want Grove Farm to know is that not only does the scholarship money help to get the students into great programs like Hope’s aerospace program at Texas, but the opportunity to interview with a panel and have that experience gives them the confidence to do it over and over as they move forward…I know that opportunities like Grove Farm provide help for our Kaua‘i students to be successful in the next phase of their lives.”

Shoot for the stars, Hope! We look forward to your continued success.
